Ran Clan[]

Known also as the Indigo Clan or Blue Clan, the most powerful clan in Saiunkoku after the Shi clan.

Kou Clan[]

Known also as the Red Clan or the Crimson Clan. Holds equal power to the Ran Clan and the third most powerful clan in Saiunkoku.

Hyou Clan[]

Known also as the Light Indigo Clan, a mysterious clan outside the eight colored clans that has worked in the shadow of the imperial family and known for their supernatural powers. Originally a counterpart of the imperial clan founded by the first Emperor's younger sister. Daughters of the imperial family were frequently sent to the Hyou clan to become priestesses or to be married off.

  • Sa ShunkiEiki's granddaughter. Although not a part of the clan, she has Hyou heritage and supernatural powers.

The officials who are working in the central government are the Imperial Court Officials. Many officials who pass the national exams dream of becoming an official in the central government. The ranks in the central government are usually very prestigious and high.

The officials who are away from the capital and working in one of the 8 provinces are the provincial officials. The examination faction normally aim for the court. Thus, most of the officials of the noble faction are dominant in the 8 provinces.

Examination Faction[]

Government officials who achieved their rank through the examination system developed by Emperor Senka. Most of these officials hold loyalty to the Emperor.

Government officials who attained their rank through their noble lineage. Many are opposed to the Emperor because the previous Emperor, Senka, had brutally purged many of the minor nobles in court, particularly branch families of the Shi Clan, in order to reduce their influence in court.

Wolves of the Wind[]

A secret group of assassins, whose leader is assigned the title of the "Black Wolf". They serve the Emperor, though the current Black Wolf answers to Advisor Sho as Ryuuki is unaware of the Wolves of the Wind.

Merchant's Guild[]

The Merchant's guild is an association of merchants in Saiunkoku. It has branches all over the country.

Kiyou's Underworld Syndicate[]

The leaders of Kiyou's underground. They are an independent group who handles all kind of criminals and persecute them during the National Exams and other festivities.
